NHL Betting Advice – Make Money Betting On NHL
NHL Betting Advice
The NHL schedule includes a massive load of of 82 games for each of the 31 NHL teams. Which equals a hell of a lot of games, and a lot of opportunities to win…. and lose money.
NHL betting is a tough task for bettors, but it’s also one of the most thrilling betting experiences in terms of game action, goals scored and tension.
While not as popular as NBA, NFL or MLB, the Canadian betting market more than make up for wagers taken on the top legal sportsbooks.
Below is an overview of the different types of NHL betting markets, NHL betting advice and bankroll management.
Popular NHL Betting Markets
Most online sportsbooks offer a large variety of markets for NHL, from line markets to exotic Player Prop markets.
Below are the most common NHL betting markets.
NHL Line Betting
NHL Line betting (or Puck/Goal Line Betting) is the most common market and offers more value than a straight up Moneyline bet.
The Puck/Goal Line is given by the sportsbook, and is their estimation of how many goals an NHL team is expected to beat there opponent by. The sportsbook will try to hold 50% of bets on each side of the NHL Goal Line, ot ensure they profit regardless of the outcome of the game (they do this by taking “Juice/Vigorish” from each bet).
The Line is shown as an (+) or (-) symbol, with the favourite (-) given a goal/s handicap they must beat for their line to pay out for the bettor.
An NHL Goal Line bet will generally have odds ranging from -110 to -105 for either side of the Line. (The better the odds, the less “Juice” the bookmaker takes per bet.
NHL Line bet example –
Montreal Canadiens__ -2.0 (-110) | Boston Bruins__+2.0 (-110)
In this example, the Montreal Canadiens are favorites, and must win the game by 3+ goals for a winning result for the bettor, and 2.0 goals for a ‘Push’ (money back from some sportsbooks).
On the other side of the market Detroit Red Wings must win the game, or lose by 1 goal or less for a winning result. A loss of 2 goals will make it a ‘Push’ (money back from some sportsbooks).
NHL Money Line Betting
A Money Line bet has the bettor place a bet on the team they think will win the game outright.
NHL Moneyline betting is a little riskier than a Line Bet, as there is no margin for error if you bet on the underdog. In the same vein, if you bet on a heavy favourite, you will be getting very low returns on your outlay.
If you wager on the underdog, you’ll get odds from $-100 to around +600 for a long shot underdog. NHL betting can be difficult to profit from in the long run with straight up Moneyline wagers, with underdogs often getting up.
NHL Money Line bet example –
Montreal Canadiens __-185| Boston Bruins__+134
Total Goals Over Under
Total Goals betting is a bet on whether the total number of goals in a game (sum of both team’s goals) will go over a total number of goals offered by the sportsbook.
Total Goals market example –
Total Points Under 3.5__(-110) | Total Points Under 3.5__ (-110)
NHL Money Line Betting
A Money Line bet has the bettor place a bet on the team they think will win the game outright.
NHL Moneyline betting is a little riskier than a Line Bet, as there is no margin for error if you bet on the underdog. In the same vein, if you bet on a heavy favourite, you will be getting very low returns on your outlay.

Puck Line Betting
This works the same way as a Goal Line bet, however the (+) or (-) is standardized at 1.5 is given for all games, with odds adjusted towards either side= depending on the favorite. The favorite has their goal handicap start at -1.5, while the underdog starts with a handicap of +1.5 goals.
Puck Line betting odds will fluctuate depending on how much the discrepancy in the matchup.
NHL Futures Propositions
NHL Futures Proposition bets are usually resulted at the end of the NHL regular or post season.
Example of NHL Futures bets include the Best Season Record (Finish 1st on ladder), Stanley Cup Winners and Leading Points Scorer.
NHL Betting Advice
Before you start throwing your hard earned dollars around, consider the following NHL betting tips.
- Injuries – Losing star players, or a star goalie, can be the difference between a win or loss. Keep an eye on injury reports and you could spot a bargain early in the betting markets.
- Home and road win/loss record– Most teams play better on their home ice, but there are also teams with solid win/loss records away from home. There is value when two evenly matched teams play, with the away team having a strong road record.
- Don’t bet drunk –
We all get some extra courage after a few beers, but that confidence generally isn’t justified. Place bets before heading to the bar, and you’ll make better judgement calls. - Don’t focus on star players – They could have an effect on games, however that’s not always the case in NHL, with the exception of the goalie. Offensive players only play about a 1/3 of a game, so don’t rely on one or two stars to get your bet over the line.
- Only bet if you find an edge –
Don’t bet on every NHL game. Only wager when you feel that you have reasoning/have done the study. - Study the Goalies:
A star goalie is priceless, and the sportsbook markets often reflect their form. Study a goalies performance against teams. A poor set of goalies can lead to a high-scoring game. - Stay away from paid tips –
Paid tips services sell “guaranteed winning picks”, but many are usually in business to take clients for a huge ride. If their tips were guaranteed, there would be no need for them to spend time uploading tips to profit on their systems. - NHL Betting Bankroll Management:
Before the season starts, set aside a betting bankroll. Don’t go beyond this bankroll, and don’t wager more than 5% of your bankroll on a single bet. Read below for more details. - Shop for Lines:
Join more than two sportsbooks and shop around for the best lines each day. If you find a site offering superior odds on a market than another sportsbook, take the bet.
NHL Betting Bankroll Management
Bankrolls are simple to explain and hard to stick to.
If you can’t to follow bankroll management strictly, you’ll likely end up losing in the long term. A long term strategy is what wins in the end, and keeping a level head is key.
Never chase your losses, and don’t ever adjust the amounts of your units should you get on a hot streak.
The most common bankroll management system is the “unit” or a “star”…
What are unit and star systems?
The ‘Unit’ or ‘Star’ is a confidence ratings for a bet.
A ‘star’ or ‘unit’ amount shows the confidence in that bet. An easy way to do this is to have 3 different levels of confidence.
- i.e 1 star/1 unit, 2 stars/2 units, 3 stars/3 units. (Experienced bettors may use 4 and 5 star/units)
Each star or unit has a dollar value, which depends on the total amount of your bankroll.
For example –
- 1 star/1 unit ($10 bet), 2 stars/2 units ($20 bet), 3 stars/3 units ($30 bet).
Regardless of confidence in a bet, never change from betting within your set bankroll strategy.
Good advice – Never bet over 2-5% of your bankroll on a single play.
Bankrolls in practice
The NHL season begins and you set aside $1,000 as your betting bankroll.
Total Bankroll = $1,000
1% = $10.00 | 2% = $20.00 | 3% = $30.00
After the first few weeks, your Betting Bankroll increases to $1,150, and now it’s time to adjust –
Total Bankroll = $1,150
1% = $11.50 | 2% = $23.00 | 3% = $34.50
If your betting bankroll increases, still make sure to stay with your set plan.
Should have a losing streak, adjust your star and unit sizes to scale –
Like so –
Total Bankroll = $800
1% = $8.00 | 2% = $16.00 | 3% = $24.00
Follow your betting bankroll plan through good and bad and you’ll have less chance of losing it all. You’ll also have a more enjoyable betting experience.
If you are new to NHL betting, we suggest ‘Flat Betting’….
Flat Betting = Betting for beginners
Flat Betting is placing identical unit/$ amounts on all bets, no matter your confidence.
Flat Betting is ideal for those starting their NHL betting journey, and those without the time to study markets effectively.
Should your NHL betting experience grow, the star or unit system is the next step.
Don’t begin your bankroll with more than you can afford to lose, and don’t ever create a new bankroll during an NHL season.
Take this advice, and you’ll have less stress and more profit.
Final thoughts on NHL betting
We love NHL betting although our knowledge of the game from a betting standpoint is not elite. The fact that the NHL runs along the NBA season is a heaven for bettors like us who enjoy a daily parlay.
If you like betting action everyday, and risky markets with exciting game-play, NHL betting is perfect for you.
Watching an NHL game is one of the best betting experiences out there.
Enjoy.
